Take a look at these wonderful set of three kaisa baskets - hand made with upcycled sarees. They are great as general storage, for kids toys, the laundry, for whatever storage needs you have.
Our artisans are from the northern region of Bangladesh - Rangpur. The purchase of these baskets providesa sustainable and reliable source of income to support their families and communities.
Kaisa is a wild grass that is used in Bangladeshi basket-making. Our baskets also use sarees that we upcycle from the garment industry. Saree strips are used to bond the coils at the top, to finish-off these baskets.
A sustainable fibre, kaisa grows along the riverbanks in Bangladesh. When kaisa dries, it changes color from natural light green to a pale tan. It is widely used in Bangladesh but availability in Australia is limited.
Our Fair Trade artisans bunch the kaisa strands and coil the gathered strand on top of each other - to make the basket. As the coils are made, they are bound together with upcycled saree and palm leaf.
