Pencil case made by the ISAN weavers in Thailand.
The north-east of Thailand, around Nong Khai, is often drought stricken and the soil is generally of poor quality. This - and the loss of land to "development" - has made the future of the villagers of the region insecure.
"Isan" is the name given to the rural north east of Thailand.
In 1983 the Good Shepherd Sisters established income-generating projects for the village women and men. At Isan Weaving and in the villages around the area, a number of women are involved in weaving cloth, using the traditional or contemporary methods and designs of the region. The results are high quality clothing, bags and purses, homeware and other items developed at the Regina Centres in Nong Khai and the village of Huai Sai.
